General and Mission:
Geitonas School library founded in 2000, operates as a modern information and media center that supports the academic process. The library accommodates a spacious reading hall, equipped with personal computers and safe internet access. The library also contains a reading hall and for young students, a collection department for international students and finally, a collection department of old & rare books.
The library, in its effort to provide the best services to our students, teachers and school community, has embraced the UNESCO/IFLA School Library Manifesto 1999.
The library's mission consists in supporting the educational process, developing young readers and learners, providing easy and safe access to information and knowledge and working with students, teachers, parents and the administration to achieve school goals. Moreover, we organize educational activities that promote culture and social awareness and teach information literacy.
The library’s services are provided, with respect to personal life, data and privacy, without any kind of discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religion, age, disability or other.
Geitonas School Library is also a member of the Greek Libraries Network, organized by the National Library of Greece (NLG), with whom we inter-develop programs that promote joy of reading and learning.
Collection:
The library currently has over 29.000 titles, including books, magazines, newspapers and audiovisual resources. The library’s collection is in various foreign languages, with the majority being in Modern Greek (17.000), followed by English (1.762), German (345), and French (319).
The library, in order to index and catalog its resources, uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system, NLG subject headings and the collection covers every academic area possible such as: computer science, philosophy, psychology, religion, social sciences, literature, science and technology, arts & recreation, literature, history & and geography, as well as resources addressing the school’s curriculum.
The library’s online public access catalog (OPAC), hosted in cooperation with the National Documentation Center (ΕΚΤ) of Greece, can be found in the following address: https://geitonaslib.openabekt.gr/en/discover.
The library’s OPAC provides the user with a multifaceted interface for querying the database, either by launching a keyword search or by selecting an advanced search dialog, among others.
Short user training programs are organized by the library staff, aiming to help students understand the library’s collection and information retrieval process. The library also provides documentation for writing projects, conducting bibliographical research and advancing information literacy.
