CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)
"A journey that begins in the brains and ends in the heart".
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)
The three strands of CAS, Creativity (arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking), Activity (physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle) and Service (an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student) comprise the CAS program. The emphasis in CAS is on encouraging students to develop their own identities, in accordance with the ethical principles of the IB and the IB learner profile. To this end, a number of actions are undertaken, the apex of which is the CAS group project as well as other student-initiated individual experiences alongside the students’ academic studies throughout the Diploma Program. Possibly, more than any other component in the Diploma Program, CAS contributes to the IB’s mission to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. In order to demonstrate the above concepts, students are required to undertake a CAS Project. The project challenges students to:
- show initiative
- demonstrate perseverance
- develop skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making.
A good CAS program should be both challenging and enjoyable – a personal journey of self-discovery. Each student has a different starting point, and therefore different goals and needs, but for many their CAS activities include experiences that are profound and life changing.
