International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) centres on the DP core. Three components make up the core, which are studied alongside individual subjects and throughout a student’s time in the DP. These components, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) and Extended Essay (EE), provide a framework for the study of individual subjects. The DP organizes teaching and learning through six subject groups, underpinned by the DP core. Students choose a course from within each subject group. For most courses, students take written examinations at the end of the DP. In many programme areas, students complete externally assessed coursework. Components of the DP core require students to produce coursework. Research suggests that the DP is an ideal pathway to university – the impact of studying the DP on admission to university and higher education depends on each student’s performance. DP students apply to more than 3,300 higher education institutions each year, in nerarly 90 countries. As of 16 March 2017, there are 3,104 schools offering the DP, in 147 different countries worldwide. The DP has been offered at Geitonas School since 1995.
