Counseling support
The transition an adolescent goes through is a stormy and stressful period and the decision to join the IB DP Programme requires serious thinking. The Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course designed for students 16 to 18 years old. It is broad-based two-year course aimed at encouraging students to be knowledgeable and inquiring, but also caring and compassionate. Great emphasis is placed on encouraging students to develop intercultural understanding, be open-minded, and develop attitudes necessary to respect and evaluate various points of view and perspectives. Students’ support and guidance aims to help them become more familiar with the demands of the programme, set their priorities and be more responsible regarding their obligations.
The psychology - counselor in the IB DP Programme serves various roles and seeks to assess needs as well as intervene with parents, students and teachers as a preventive measure, seeking to enhance students' social and academic skills.
Through parental counselling, the families of students are supported and provided guidance on both the learning and emotional needs of students and the practices they use. In addition, the counselor-psychologist intervenes by providing short-term, issue-focused meetings with students on an individual and/or group level.
Additionally, the counsellor-psychologist cooperates systematically with all the teachers and the management of the IB, to ensure the effective and targeted communication of children inside and outside the classroom. At the same time, training lectures/seminars are held for the teachers in order to raise their awareness on specific topics (e.g. learning difficulties, bullying, crisis management, etc.).
For the last 19 years the Counseling department of Geitonas school, has organized Parent Counseling Meetings throughout the year to inform, guide and support parents with children of all ages, to help them deal with situations more efficiently. These prearranged meetings aim to involve parents and encourage them to be even more aware of issues and topics which are important for the balanced development of their children. Specifically for the IBDP Programme, for the last 23 years, there are four Parent counseling group meetings per year, to guide and enable parents to be efficiently involved in terms of emotional and psychological support with their children during this 2- Years programme.
